Touriga Nacional
GRAPE VARIETIES
It is not clear where Touriga Nacional originated, but to judge from the amount of clonal variation in the Dao and Douro regions it has been in both for a very long time. There is a village called Tourigo in the Dao, and neasrby is another village called Mortagua, which is another of Touriga Nacioal's synonyms.
The taste of Touriga Nacional:
Young Touriga Nacional has a deep and intense aroma that is reminiscent of yound Cagbernet Sauvignon, even to the extent of mixing dark, sweet fruti with a leafty freshness and hint of violets. As it matures as a port it gains wonderfully rich mulberry and blackberry richness without losing its black peppery attack and its seductive scent of flowers. As a table wine, it takes a while to lose its tannin, unless blended with other varieties, but the fruit gets sweeter and richer with age. |

Zinfandel
GRAPE VARIETIES
When Zinfandel grapes are really ripe they look like this: not just black but starting to shrivel. Growers of many other red varieties would take fright at this point, and think their grapes overripe. Zinfandel growers just love them like this. These grapes come from very old vines at Summit Lake Vineyard in the Howell Mountain AVA in Napa.
The taste of Zinfandel:
Apicy flavours indlude black pepper, clove, cinnamon and oregano; floral flavours are violets and roses; fruits range from cranberries, strawberries and raspberries through to the blackcurrant, black cherry, plums, prunes and raisins of increasing ripeness. Unripe wine taste of green beans, artichokes, green bell peppers, mint and eucalyptus. |
