GRAPE VARIETIES: Widely grown in Italy,
this variety is one where clonal selection shows its true merits. At
its best its rich fruit is responsible for the finest Chianti and Brunello
di Montalcino; at its worst, for many of the truly sad wines that one
can find in Italy. It is now being blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to
produce some of the "super-Tuscan" wines.
